Housetraining Your Puppy

Here are some tips & Tricks for house breaking your new puppy

Because there are so many alternatives for housebreaking pups, I'll just discuss my own preference.

First Things NOT to do:
When your dog goes pee in the incorrect location, NEVER spank him or her! However, you should spank yourself. You were to blame for not having him in the right location at the right time!  All Spanking your puppy will teach him/her is not to eliminate in front of you.

It's never a good idea to stick your puppy's nose in its excrement or urine. That is a pity.  Again all it teachs your puppy is not to eliminate in front of you, so it will seek out hiding spots, and won't elimiate in front of you outside where it is supposed to go.

OK. Now here's my advise for getting the work done quickly and painlessly:
I recommend keeping the puppy in an exercise pen, you can find them here, here or here.  On one end of the pen I have the bed, food & Water, the other side of the pen I have the puppy pad & Holder.  The puppy enclosures are ideal for usage in the main area where you'll be spending the most of your time. That way, your puppy will be able to see you in the same room and will be content.

They are seldom chewed, bunched up, or used as a toy if you use a holder. It's a good idea to dab some of the puppy's urine on it to give it a fragrance. This is a message to the puppy (this is the place to go). When the puppy needs to go pee unexpectedly, the floor is covered in pads, so they can't make a mistake. Good dog! You are a good person!

When the young pup has the desire to pee, he must halt, look around for an available puppy pad, and then walk over there and utilize it. Excellent dog! You are a good person!

While your puppy is learning his puppy pads, we may also teach him to go outside at the same time. Puppy will want to go pee
after every meal and as soon as he wakes up from his nap. As much as possible, use this to teach outside! When you're at home, take him for a walk on a leash. Bring him to the same location, stand there and seem bored so he doesn't believe it's time to play.

This isn't a game. Say "go potty" or any other verbal indication you like. If he goes about and smells pee or poo, he'll figure it out very fast - assuming you don't play with him. It's time to clap for him and play after he potties!! AWESOME DOG!! AWESOME HUMAN!! It may take some time at first but he/she will get better with time.

NEVER allow your puppy free reign of the house until he or she has earned it! It's OK if you want to play with him for a while or snuggle with him while watching TV, but you should never leave him alone until he's totally trained. It would be fantastic if you could accompany him to his room/pen and play or snuggle with him there! He can progress to the kitchen / bigger area with no throw rugs or carpet once he has done really well in his room on one pad. (To the little fellow, a throw rug or carpet looks and feels exactly like a toilet pad.) If your puppy pees on the floor or rug, make sure you clean it well to eliminate the aroma (after you've spanked yourself).  Use an enzymatic cleaner on carpets/floors where your puppy has accidents.  We recommend Nature's Miracle

Nighttime: I occasionally leave my dog in his bathroom, utility room, or kitchen room for the night, but he is typically sad and lonely there. They are, after all, pack animals that naturally prefer to be with their human pack. I bring the kennel (with with door) and position it next to the head of my bed, where it is easily accessible. I placed my hand inside his cage so I can put my fingers inside and he can smell me. That's how we fall asleep. He can't hold his urine all night (and neither can I), so I anticipate to have to take him outdoors to pee or use his small bathroom/utility area when he wakes up in the middle of the night.  For my own convenience, I train to both inside and outside doors. When it's pouring or snowing, my dog and I don't always want to go outdoors in our pyjamas in the middle of the night!

It's OK if you don't mind your dog sleeping on your bed. If you don't wake up when your dog starts fidgeting, he could potty in the incorrect place and you'll have to punish yourself!

Remember that when you bring your dog to a new residence, it may take him a day or two to figure out where the new pee spots are.

When you obtain a puppy from me, the housebreaking process will be much easier since I have already enabled the basics to take place. Just be cautious and strive as hard as you can to avoid "mistakes." It will put you back a bit if your dog goes in the incorrect location. Spank yourself once more and try harder next time. Some people install little bells on their doors so that their dogs may learn to knock them with their paws to signal that it's time to leave. Litter boxes are used by certain people. Whatever method you use, remain consistent and it will be completed. Then you'll have clean flooring for the next 15 years! Hooray!!!

Another approach is litterbox training, which is similar to (but not identical to) cat litterbox training. Take a look at my fellow breeder Parson's Place webpage to see what she does with her babies. She has a fantastic page there.. Corn cob bedding, which is readily accessible at most farm stores, is what I use. Getting a bag of that first, then gradually mixing in the safe pine scented kitty litter she recommends, may be beneficial. LitterBox Instructions

Patricia McConnel PhD’s books and can’t brag enough on them. She really knows dogs and is VERY good about teaching people in a fun way! Here is a link to her small but EXCELLENT book on house training “Way To Go”
