The "Teacup" Myth & Healthy Sizing
One of the most common requests we see is for a "teacup" or "micro" Yorkie. It is vital for families to understand that "Teacup" is not a recognized breed or size—it is simply a marketing buzzword used to sell undersized dogs at a premium.
The official standard for a healthy Yorkshire Terrier is typically between 4 to 7 pounds. Breeding specifically to create dogs smaller than this standard severely compromises the health and longevity of the animal. Undersized Yorkies are highly susceptible to:
- Hypoglycemia: A dangerous drop in blood sugar that can lead to seizures or even be fatal.
- Fragile Bone Structure: Making them incredibly prone to fractures from simple jumps or drops.
- Organ & Dental Failure: Cramped jaws lead to early tooth decay, and underdeveloped organs can severely shorten their lifespan.
At Setareh Yorkies, we believe in preserving the heritage of the breed. We prioritize health, structure, and temperament over trends.
Tails & Dewclaws: The Heritage Standard
Historically, Yorkshire Terriers were bred as working dogs in the mills of England. Their tails were docked and dewclaws removed to prevent them from getting caught and severely injured in machinery or while hunting in tight spaces.
Today, while they are primarily beloved companions, this practice remains a core part of the traditional breed standard. When performed correctly, this procedure is done at 3 to 5 days of age. At this early stage, the cartilage has not fully hardened, and the nervous system is still developing, making the process safe and ensuring a quick recovery.
We honor the heritage standard. Removing dewclaws also prevents painful tearing injuries later in the dog's life when they run, play, or snag the claw on blankets and carpets.
Yorkie Grooming & Coat Care
The Yorkshire Terrier is famous for its stunning, silky coat. Unlike most dogs, Yorkies have hair, not fur. This means they are considered hypoallergenic and shed very little, making them wonderful companions for allergy sufferers.
However, this human-like hair requires dedicated maintenance to keep your Yorkie comfortable and healthy:
- Daily Brushing: Essential to prevent painful mats and tangles, especially near the harness area, armpits, and behind the ears.
- Professional Grooming: Your Yorkie will need a visit to the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks. Many families opt for a shorter "puppy cut" for easier daily maintenance.
- Quality Nutrition: A glowing coat starts from the inside out. A high-quality diet and the right omega supplements are crucial for keeping their hair silky and their skin hydrated.
